Hi, I’m Tash. And I have no idea what to write ‘about’ myself. Half a century on this planet and I’m still stumped.
Not great for a writer, I know! But in my experience, people who wang on about themselves are generally phonies or freaks. And I lack the conviction for either. But I have finally – after a fitful career in TV and feature writing – found my thing. theswish.co.uk is a sustainable fashion initiative I’ve launched to get more young people into upcycling and making their own clothes. My attempt to persuade kids it’s cool to be creative.
I know – just writing ‘cool’ dates me! But anyone who’s ever been a teenager can recall the cold panic/hot flush rollercoaster ride of trying to do something different. It’s hard to put yourself out there, but the rewards can be so great! Get creative and you get happy. Help the planet and everyone wins. By learning how to turn discarded clothes and textiles into gorgeous new outfits, young people can forge their own identity. Crucially, they learn there’s no raw material can’t be transformed – including themselves!
Still need convincing? Start small, and buy my book! Pitched at readers aged 11-15yrs, The Swish tells the story of Kat, a thrift shop Cinderella who dares take on the haters and make her own gown for the school ball. It’s a funny, relatable novel for anyone who’s ever found life tough and dreamed of transforming themselves (and may or may not have fancied Andrew McCarthy in ‘Pretty in Pink’…)
You can order it from Waterstones, Amazon and all the brilliant independent bookshops that are propping up our high streets. Do share your feedback! Or just get in touch because you’re brewing up a sustainable passion project, and would appreciate a friendly stir. (You should see the things I can do with a spoon).
love Tash xx
